Offizielle Beschreibung

Official description in English

Being Christian in Vandal Africa investigates conflicts over Christian orthodoxy in the Vandal kingdom, the successor to Roman rule in North Africa, ca. 439 to 533 c.e. Exploiting neglected texts, author Robin Whelan exposes a sophisticated culture of disputation between Nicene (“Catholic”) and Homoian (“Arian”) Christians and explores their rival claims to political and religious legitimacy. These contests—sometimes violent—are key to understanding the wider and much-debated issues of identity and state formation in the post-imperial West.

Official description in English

The impact of Roman civilisation on the Empire’s clients in the West forms the subject of the first parts of this volume. Even the most successful Germanic kingdoms of the 5th-6th centuries, the author argues, such as that of the Vandals in North Africa, could not escape the grasp of the Roman Empire: their politics and culture remained conditioned by imperial models and by the continuing reality of imperial power throughout late antiquity. The subsequent articles deal with the Historia Augusta, but approaching that difficult text from the periphery, by first attempting to establish its broad literary and topical context before considering questions of its nature and date.

Description officielle en français

Composition

  • Part I : Politics and Literature in the fifth-century West
  • Part II : The Venture of the Vandals in Africa
  • The Historia Augusta, viewed from the periphery

Review

Part of the collection “Peoples of Europe”, this book is the first book dedicated entirely to the Vandals. It traces all their parcours from their appearance in History, up to their kingdom’s fall in 533AD. More than a general view, with a simple and clear explanation of the events, the authors offer a conclusion of all the latter studies on the Vandals have been up.

This book is suggested to anyone who wants a general and well-documented introduction to the Vandals, according to new academic works.

Review

Courtois’ work is the main and major reference for the study of the Vandalic History since the release of his work. Professor Christian Courtois has worked on Geiseric’s governance for his Master thesis and had this actual book as a PhD thesis. He worked on the Vandals for over 25 years until his death that happened in 1957, 2 years after the release of this book .

More than mastering and using all he could gather and reach concerning the Vandals, he worked in the University of Algiers and got in touch with anything Vandal-related on the archaeological side.
This book corrects and fills many gaps and errors done by historians prior to him. The discovery of Vandalic vestiges by the French in North Africa helped him fulfill this work and make of it a reference.

Courtois, with this book, made a revolution on how the Vandals are seen. His view on the Vandals could be seen by many readers as : “The Vandals may have been brutal, barbarians, violent and undisciplined… But nothing much or more than other peoples to deserve a label as pejorative as Vandalism.”

Informations on other versions of this book will be available soon.

Lecture on the Battle of Ad Decimum (533)

Français | Español | عربية
Staff of the video

On the 13th of September, 533, perhaps the most fateful & decisive battle in the history of the Vandals & their Kingdom took place. The location, 10 miles south west of Carthage, at a site named ‘Ad Decimum’, meaning at ten miles. One of the Rare sources of this time is the Opus ‘History of Wars’ by Procopius of Caesarea, who documented the battle in the third volune of his series, known by its befitting nickname ‘Vandalic Wars’.

Our lecture is a passage taken from the integral 18th chapter, detailing the battle.

The video have been made by amateur members of Geiseric Society. Thanks for consideration.
